Roselake Drill Team will host the Sixth Annual ‘Drill in the Pines’ Competition, March 20, 2021 at the Nacogdoches Exposition and Civic Center. NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS – The sixth annual “Drill in the Pines” Equestrian Drill Team Competition will be at the Nacogdoches County Exposition and Civic Center on March 20, 2021. The day will start at 8 a.m. with patriotic color guard teams and finish the day with the advanced division featuring the best teams in the region! Entries are divided by skill level, size and costumes. They will be judged on their horsemanship, teamwork, costumes while performing choreographed sequences. “It is a lot of hard work and teamwork both in and out of the arena.” Said Miriam Mumm, Roselake Drill team’s drill master. She added, “Riders have to always know who his or her partner is at all times which changes with the different movements throughout a run.” For example, teams of four to sixteen will ride in a figure eight patter and then transform into move that looks like an unzipping zipper or turning bicycle wheels or a pinwheel.” Themed events add to the performances by adding colorful and delightful costumes. In the past riders and horses dressed as fairies, pirates, Dolly Parton, hippies, and characters from Marry Poppins. Jailynn Sayler said, “The themed events are the best! I have been a tiger in a safari theme, a colorful circus clown and a rainbow troll.” Beginner teams consist of riders who have ridden less than two years and are in the beginning stages of learning how to ride. Advanced divisions are the teams you will see performing with flags at a fast lope at rodeos, like the Nacogdoches Pro Rodeo March 25-27, 2021. There is even a walking or lead line division for the little kids or for adults who cannot ride in a trotting or loping division! Drill in the Pines is the first competition in this year’s series. There are two other competitions; in Burton and Magnolia, Texas. Teams will accumulate points, then compete in the series finals which will be held June 12, 2021 at the Nacogdoches Expo Center.
